Chapter Fifteen

While that was all well and good, she still had a question to answer.

“You mentioned you saw him go to someone’s room,” I prompted her. Star sighed, like giving up the person he’d stopped to see before he died was a betrayal and not a necessary truth for justice. Because yes, an asshat or not, even men like Colin Narrow deserved it.

Barely. But my bias was showing, so don’t go by my opinion.

When she did speak, it wasn’t in judgment but compassion. “I believe you know her fairly well,” Star said with a delicacy that spoke of years of her own battle with gossip and finger pointing. “Terri Jacob.”

Okay, wasn’t expecting that name to pop up in connection with the deceased. “You’re positive?” I didn’t mean to second guess her or anything, but come on. Terri? What would she have to do with him?

Star just nodded, leaving it with me a moment while I pondered another friend might be a murderer.

The soft sound of a shoe squeaking on the floor spun me around to find, yet again, the ever nosy Heidi (what, was she trying to oust me as the busybody of the year or something?) lurking at the doorway, eavesdropping.

As soon as she spotted me, she ran again, naturally. At least I usually had the good grace to stand my ground and ask questions of those whose private conversations I attempted to partake of. That was only fair, honestly.

I thanked Star and didn’t hesitate to return her hug when she opened her arms to me.

“Thank you, Fiona,” she whispered in my ear. “For trying not to say the wrong thing. It means a lot to me knowing you care enough when you barely know me.”

I shook my head at her, a bit choked up such a thing was even her reality. “It’s called compassion and a shaky try at understanding.”

She laughed, but there was a little bitterness in it. “I wish everyone believed as you do. For now, you have a friend in me. Now, go catch the killer, darling, I’m still shaking over the dead body in my yoga room.”

Though I really needed to talk to Terri, it was time to pin down the sneaky chef and find out what she was up to. She didn’t give me too hard of a hunt, as it turned out, lingering nearby and looking guilty enough when I strode to meet her. She didn’t take off this time, at least, arms crossing over her chest though less in an aggressive pose and more so almost protective. As if I was going to do her harm in some way. Hey, if she gave me a reason, no promises. Redheaded temper triggers were my specialty.

“You have questions,” she said.

“You don’t say,” I shot back, falling into my old friend, sarcasm, about as easily as I breathed. Heidi winced and glanced both ways up and down the corridor while I went on. “You’re not being very subtle,” I said, easing up on the attitude enough she relaxed somewhat, clearly nervous, however.
